Sherwin Tjia!

  • Dressed in Black: We’ve named this blog column in honour of the tune by The Shangri-Las cuz it’s a little moody sounding…like us! Check out other entries in this series by clicking on the Style & Fashion category. Now without any further ado, our twelfth interviewee, Sherwin Tjia!

In 5 words or less, describe your style:
Day drab. Night drag.

Describe two items in your closet that you love:
Perfect little black dress. Imperfect outlandish gold sequined dress.

Fashion trend you swore you would not partake in but have fallen victim to:
Green communist-style Che Guevera hat.

If you had to get a knuckle tattoo, what would it read?
On my right knuckle, it would read, LOVE. And on my left knuckle, it would read LY.

What do you listen to when getting ready to go out/stay in?
I like mashups.

Biggest fashion pet peeve?
Overpowering perfume in enclosed spaces.

Your favourite style icon?
I don’t really follow fashion – I’m very sorry. Sometimes I’ll see something in a window that I like. For example, last year I saw a jacket made out of the skins of plush animals which I thought was very charming. Last week I saw in a store window some winners of a fashion contest and there was this one dress that was festooned with these little bunches of scrunched-up fabric that was very pretty. I remember that dead swan dress that Bjork wore to some awards show as astonishing. But in terms of one person who wears things that I consistently find impressive, it’s very difficult. I suspect that I am looking for someone who approaches fashion the way Dr. Suess approached drawing, with a zany playfulness that approaches more costuming than fashion, really. But their entire collections would be completely impractical for any season but Halloween, or people who don’t mind overwhelming attention.

Favourite shoppes?
The Bay. Jacob. Le Chateau. Bedo. Tristan.

Your best vintage find/DIY fashion project?
Not sure.

What do you see yourself wearing in 5 years?
In all honesty, likely the same thing I’m wearing now.

About

  • Sherwin Tjia didn’t submit a bio about himself, and that might be because he is a very busy person. He is known for so many different and lovely things! You might be familiar with some of his projects such as Slowdance Night, The Honeysuckle Strip Spelling Bee, his graphic novel The Hipless Boy (get it at Drawn & Quarterly) or his volume of pseudo-haikus, The World is a Heart Breaker or his comic strip book Pedigree Girls. You may even be wearing one of his hugely popular scrabble pins or listening to his CDR project, Listen to My Friends Masturbate. Sherwin also collaborates with too many people to name here but we will mention that he has designed all of the covers for Lickety Split smut zine so far and designed the cover art for our Big City E.P.

death_matchlargeHey, if you wanna read something for once, check out Broken Pencil’s “Indie Writer Death Match“! Basically some of the finest little-known short story writers are pitted against each other and then folks vote for the winner! The coolest part for NW is that TWO of our buds are involved this year: one Sherwin Tjia (who did the Big City E.P. album art, among many other things like Slowdance Night and Lickety Split zine’s covers, etc) and Jessica Grosman, our high school friend extraordinaire (PS: SHE IS WINNING HER ROUND!!!!!!!!!!!) Vote now, please.

“Strangely familiar sultry rock music is the taste of summer, like putting little beads on the spokes of your one-speed. As you bump gently down rocky ol’ Esplanade humming throaty sex ballads to yourself, the mountain and the city and your motion suggest something cinematic, and your right brain scans quickly for an appropriate soundtrack. Maybe something fresh- like that Nightwood band- who kinda sound like happy, cocky grrrl goths. Their simple songs make you feel comfortable and the good ones make you want to sing along. Equally good for pre-drinking or 4a.m. seclusion- Big City is good music for good people. Think end credits of a nihilistic ’90s cop movie.” – Nick Cabelli, The Concordia Link, April 15, 2008

“Reminds me of Sleater-Kinney.” – CJAM Music Review, April 17, 2008
