Dear everybody,

Happy holidays!

Erin and Amber made you something: a rockin’ holiday jam to sip hot toddies/mistletoe grind/knock back the egg nog to!  The tune was recorded over a couple of days at home and it’s called Santa Suit Tattoo (XMAS 4 EVA).

You can also find it here on a holiday on-line mixtape compiled by Feats of Strength, featuring holiday trax by a bunch of other musicians too (Mixylodian, Parlovr, Hamilton Trading Co., etc). Wanna share it with your buds? RSVP to the mixtape’s Facebook event!

Well, enjoy!  We wish you a happy NEW YEAR for 2011.

  • Download our new song Carve a path like a valley through the land for free over on Meet You At The Show – up for one week only. After this week, the track will be available for sale on iTunes and for listening on our myspace and the like.

In July, we met with our friend/producer Martin Horn (of Digital Bird Studios and the band Cotton Mouth) to record a new song called Carve a path like a valley through the land. This was a bit of a departure for us because when we were last in studio, we put together our beloved Carta Marina, which we loved so much as an album (and a concept album at that) that we decided to get romantic and press it on vinyl immediately. With this new song, we’ve still got that loving feeling, we just wanna let this beautiful beast out of the corral right away.

Carve a path like a valley through the land is different than the ocean-themed songs on Carta Marina. At the risk of sounding a bit flakey, we might suggest that it’s a song about going back to the (is)land/evolution/forgiveness/secular pilgrimages/neighbourhood tourism/putting down roots/putting your root down/dancing/anti-colonial re-visioning of Canada/the prairies/the flatlands/the endless encircling horizon…uh, that sort of thing. We hope it’s also:

a) “A hot summer jam” to rival Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.”
b) Gonna bring back the covered wagon
c) Will make ears everywhere happier

So yeah. Let us know how that all works out for you, OK? This here is a dialogue, sort of.

Concordia’s Women’s Studies Student Association invites you to join us as we screen Kerri Koch’s documentary on the origins of the Riot Grrrl movement, and introduce the members of this year’s WSSA executive! This is a perfect opportunity to curl up in the cozy confines of the Simone de Beauvoir Institute, re-stoke your feminist fire and learn more about what WSSA can do for you!

  • 2170 rue Bishop
  • FREE
  • Facebook event

All are welcome! Movie-style munchies will also be provided.

About the film:
“don’t need you” is a documentary film that tells the story of the origins of Riot Grrrl in the American independent music scene of the 1990s, and how this feminist movement evolved into a revolutionary underground network of education and self-awareness through music, writing, activism, and women-friendly community. The film gives audiences a chance to meet key figures in the development of Riot Grrrl and see for themselves how these women have changed the history of music and feminism forever. The film features one-on-one interviews interspersed with rare, archival materials, including original Riot Grrrl fanzines, flyers, and photographs, as well as seldom seen footage from pioneering Riot Grrrl bands like Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, and Bratmobile.

Two directives today, kittens: wear red to celebrate World AIDS Day and get tested tonight, anonymously and for free! Yesss!

  • In honor of World AIDS Day, Head & Hands is hosting a free anonymous HIV screening clinic for youth 12-25 on Tuesday, December 1 between 5-9:30 pm. Anonymous HIV testing means that there is no record of the test or its results in a patient’s file. Anonymous testing uses a code on the test – not the patient’s name or health insurance information. Only the patient will know their result. Test results take 2 weeks to come in. Please note that the screening will be run by a Health Educator and the doctor will not be present. No other medical services will be offered during this clinic. This service is free – any donations to our clinic are much appreciated! Please call (514) 481-0277 for more info.

Dear sweet school of rock n roll fish,

Just wanted to let you know that three songs from Carta Marina are up on our myspace page for your aural pleasure. The first person to identify which song contains the lyrics “I see the shadows” in the comments section will get something for free (like maybe a 3″ button, free entry to the launch, a t-shirt…something- I just need to check in with the other NW-ers first…I’m not all-powerful, it would seem).

Best,

Moi!

Some of us wish we could usurp some of that gritty, drrrty male energy LIVE.  Here he is kicking down a mic stand  [1:09] at Metropolis during his encore:

Off topic:

Amber wants to buy me some house dresses or whatever from the 50s (super sweet, btw), but I’m more into this that I saw over at Bleach Black.

UPDATE ON US: It’s amazing how you can plan and imagine details regarding a recording but when you’re actually in it, a lot of that stuff is out the window and ideas/inspirations are found on the spot.  Martin at DBS is doing a great job and the band is amazingly supportive of each other- these new songs are sounding great (if we can say so ourselves!).  Sometimes there are crazy highs and lows due to the amount of attention and energy demanded of everyone, but it all feels like an integral part of what this record is becoming.  I’m stopping myself from expressing how good I feel about the album because I don’t want to jinx it!  We’ll continue to timelapse our time recording and give updates when there’s anything interesting to share.  Yeah!
