Martin Horn (Cotton Mouth) and Mikey Bwickers (Mixylodian/Asthma Camp) were righteous on today’s edition of The Montreal Sessions! The two collaborated on three cover tunes, executed with the help of a saxophone, some backing tracks, a pretty blue guitar and Martin’s pipes. Have a listen to their live set:

We interspersed the live tunes with some great conversation about making music in montreal, Martin’s recording studio Digital Bird Studios, touring, the lunar perigee and loads more, as well as listened to songs by Gobble Gobble, Purity Ring, Mixylodian, Sick Friend, Cotton Mouth and more. Have a listen right here (March 15th) for the whole show.

Thanks again to Mark and Joe of CKUT for teching the live set!

Tune in next week to catch Sick Friend!

Charlie's feet and pedals

Tyler's pedals

Reversing Falls were a helluva lot of fun on yesterday’s edition of The Montreal Sessions! If you missed the show, don’t fret, you can it via the archives (their live set starts at 48min. 47sec, interview is later in the second hour). The live set is also embedded below. These gents have well-crafted tunes replete with “sick tones, sweet riffs and fresh beats” and their banter is pretty witty tune.

You should listen to the whole two hours when you have a chance, we played tunes by Ancient Kids, Cotton Mouth, new tUnE-yArDs, Patti Smith, Marnie Stern and a whole lot more, plus we kicked off the show with some Sleater-Kinney and a short spoken piece dedicated to International Women’s Day, which was yesterday, the 8th of March.

Thanks again to Mark and Joe of CKUT for teching the live set!

Tune in next week to catch Martin Horn of Cotton Mouth!

Toronto! We can’t get enough of ya. Come on out to the show and bring all your dance-loving buds cuz we’re playing with some excellent DJs and we’re the lone band on the bill. (E-mail us to get guest listed!)

Two items worth knowing about (file under Cool Friends)…

As y’all probably know, Jeremy is the drummer in Nightwood. He also plays in two other awesome bands. One is Parlovr, currently on tour in China and who are re-releasing their 2008 EP on Dine Alone Records. Cool, non? Check out their latest tour video ici and download their song Pen to the Paper on MYATS.

The other-other band Jeremy plays in is Cotton Mouth, which is fronted by Martin Horn (who produced our two recordings) and whose back-up band is Parlovr. Doubly cool. Cotton Mouth has recently self-released their latest E.P. and will be playing at this years Osheaga! Rejoice! UPDATE: You can download the Cotton Mouth EP right here.

  • Ref: a bit about cool.

My awesome bud Nikki is approaching holiday shopping with a very particular approach this year. She’s doing something she calls Radical Buy Local or Buy Local Extreme, which she defines as buying gifts from people you know (or a friend of a friend) in order to support one’s community! It’s requiring her to think carefully and creatively about what to give to the folks in her life. Inspiring!

Here are some local (Montreal/Toronto) bands we hope you support! All these releases came out in 2009. Click on the photos to visit their on-line presences…

Nomadic Massive: an awesome Montreal-based hip-hop act with an amazing live show and a great sense of social justice!

Our band's new record! Each one has a digital download card inside. Available on-line as well as Cheap Thrills, Phonopolis and Sound Central in Montreal.

Modernboys moderngirls: Toronto retro rock trio who we're touring with in January!

Brave Radar! A Building! Apartment pop!

Also, anything on Fixture Records!

The Balconies! Orginally from Ottawa but now based in Toronto, they'll be in Montreal next month. Contagious melodies! Glow-in-the-dark CD cover!

Cotton Mouth split EP with Dishwasher. Fabulous!

Lake of Stew! Good for your soul, good for your parents even!
