- Dressed in Black: We’ve named this blog column in honour of the tune by The Shangri-Las cuz it’s a little moody sounding…like us! Check out other entries in this series by clicking on the Style & Fashion category. Now without any further ado, our sixteenth interviewee, Jessika Fancy!
In 5 words or less, describe your style:
A lot of black and a lot of gaudy goods.
Describe two items in your closet that you love:
My closet is overflowing with things I love but this black and silver (kind of like tinsel) vintage dress probably from the 80s I found at Value Village for New Years of 2008 that is pretty awesome: low neck, tight and big shoulders! And this black leather fanny pack that belonged to my mother in the 80s, fully studded in gold and rhinestones. It’s for sure one of my prized possessions.
Fashion trend you swore you would not partake in but have fallen victim to (and now kind of love):
I can’t really think of anything except the shiny black leggings trend. I still don’t even have a pair, but I secretly kind of want one!
If you had to get a knuckle tattoo, what would it read?
It’s actually something I’ve been considering seriously…I’m leaning towards ‘hard love’.
What do you listen to when getting ready to go out/stay in?
Going out=getting ready to anything I can dance to! if I’m just hanging out at home it’s a lot of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks and the mix my roommate just made for me.
Biggest fashion pet peeve?
The ‘I’m really trying to look like I just threw this on or spent hours at value village, but I actually just spent 500$ at urban outfitters‘ look, and because of this ‘phenomenon’ I feel like you can’t really tell who has true style or who just has a big bank account. Having good style shouldn’t be about how much money you have and besides, having good style cannot be bought, in my opinion.
Your favourite style icon?
I just admire people who can put things together and make it work for them. If I had to pick someone for this time period I’d have to say Beth Ditto. I don’t love everything she wears all the time but I do love that she just doesn’t give a shit what people think. Also there’s not enough visible plus size babes in the fashion world!
Favourite shoppes?
Any and all thrift stores, garage sales, church bazaars. They’re a total addiction. I also love shopping when i’m in the states, there’s a lot more variety for fat people than in Canada.
Your best vintage find/DIY fashion project?
Too many to name! One of my recent finds was a black tank top, the bottom half has black/white stripes with this big gold anchor sewn on the front. Most of the clothes I get at thrift stores I end up altering. Making dresses out of long sleeved turtlenecks is always a fun project.
What do you see yourself wearing in 5 years?
I feel like it’ll probably be pretty similar to what it is now. Gaudy, trashy goods, As long as it isn’t ordinary and that it’s full of glamour!
